The final draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be held on December 5 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday. The event will determine the group stage matchups for the tournament, which will feature a record 48 national teams across 104 matches. President Trump made the announcement during a press conference at the White House, where he was joined by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Vice President J.D. Vance, and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

Trump, Infantino announce 2026 World Cup draw date and venue
President Trump announces Washington will host the 2026 FIFA World Cup draw at the Kennedy Center.

The draw is scheduled to begin at noon Eastern Time and will be attended by representatives from all qualified nations, international media, FIFA officials, and selected fans. The decision to host the draw in Washington followed months of deliberation over possible venues, including a proposal to hold it in Las Vegas. FIFA’s choice of the Kennedy Center, the United States’ national cultural institution, signals the importance placed on the global event’s ceremonial aspects. The Kennedy Center is currently undergoing significant renovations ahead of the 250th anniversary of the United States in 2026, with plans to use its upgraded facilities as a temporary headquarters for the tournament’s organizing committee.

Security measures for the event will involve coordination between federal and local law enforcement, including the deployment of the National Guard, according to U.S. officials. Infantino praised the scale and ambition of the upcoming World Cup, which will span 16 host cities across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. He described the tournament as the largest in FIFA history and compared the scope of matches to “104 Super Bowls.” The expanded format follows FIFA’s decision to increase the number of participating teams from 32 to 48, making the 2026 edition the most extensive ever held.

Tournament to feature record 48 teams across 16 cities

As of August 2025, 12 national teams have secured qualification, including co-hosts United States, Mexico, and Canada, as well as Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Australia, Iran, Japan, Jordan, South Korea, New Zealand, and Uzbekistan. By the time of the draw, 42 teams are expected to have confirmed their places, with the final six to be determined through intercontinental playoff matches scheduled for March 2026. The draw will divide the 48 teams into 12 groups of four, with the top two teams from each group and the eight best third-placed teams advancing to a newly expanded Round of 32.

FIFA has confirmed that the draw will follow strict competitive balance protocols, taking into account team rankings, geographical representation, and past performance. During the announcement, President Trump addressed logistical and immigration concerns for visiting fans and teams. He stated that while many nations will benefit from expedited visa access, others may face stricter entry procedures depending on U.S. security evaluations. Iran, a qualified team, remains subject to U.S. travel restrictions, though no formal exemptions have been announced.

Trophy visit to White House underscores global significance

Infantino presented the FIFA World Cup trophy during the event, a symbolic gesture that underscored the significance of the draw on the global football calendar. The trophy was temporarily displayed at the White House during the press conference, drawing media attention and reflecting the administration’s high-profile support of the tournament. The 2026 FIFA World Cup will run from June 11 to July 19, with matches held across 16 cities including New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, Miami, Toronto, Vancouver, and Mexico City.

The final is scheduled to take place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. FIFA projects the tournament to attract record attendance and global viewership, supported by the expanded format and tri-nation hosting model. The December 5 draw marks a critical milestone in finalizing preparations for the tournament, shaping the competitive landscape and logistical planning for participating teams, host cities, and international broadcasters. – By Content Syndication Services.
